Stock Cast Aluminum Wheels
 

All FJ enthusiasts, I'm new to the forum and have a question about corrosion on the standard "6 spoke" Alum wheels. The coating/plating on all wheels is flaking/bubbling off on the inside (web) portion of the spokes. No problems yet on the face portions of the wheels. Aside from keeping the wheels clean of road salt etc, any ideas on maintenance and repair?

It might be beneficial to sand down the peeling areas and then paint/clearcoat the inside of the rim to slow down the inevitable

Welcome aboard. I have no positive info to offer you. Personally I beat my fj up a bit, so, I wouldn't care if my wheels started pealing like that. But none the less. I would agree with birdman. Sand the areas, and put a few layers of a good protective clear coat on them. But yes, eventually, they will turn to shit like you're starting to see. All you can do is try to hold that time at bay for as long as possible.

Well gents, I'll be honest. My "rig" is one of the first out (2007) and is a lowly 2 wheeler I bought new while working in Dallas. Being a snow country Mid-West boy and one time Hot Rod mechanic, I figured I wouldn't have much use for 4WD in Dallas.
Nonetheless it's a great set of wheels with 117K it runs strong, does well in deep snow (on pavement), rolls on down the road nicely and carries two Australian Shepherds in comfort.
Thanks for the advice on prep and painting, that’s the route I'll go with repairs.

Sounds good. Do you have the rear locker and Atrac? Obviously as far as offroading goes, 4wd is invaluable, but a 2wd with locker and atrac can definitely go lots of places. Hell, might even be able to beat a jeep or two!
